Our Story

Inspired by My Grandmother, Yo Okano

Okano's Gift is named for my grandmother, who was incarcerated in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II. Despite everything taken from her, she became a remarkable home chef — someone who understood that a good meal is more than sustenance. It's dignity. It's care. It's belonging.

I learned to cook at her side, and later at my mother's. Those lessons became a 40-year career as a professional chef. Now, I'm bringing that lifetime of skill to a new purpose: preparing and giving away high-quality frozen meals through Okano's Gift.

My grandmother would have benefited from meals like these during her incarceration — food made not just to fill stomachs, but to honor the person eating it. Food that tastes like someone cared. That's what we provide.

Why It Matters

Yet some neighbors still face moments when cooking isn’t possible — due to age, illness, limited mobility, tight schedules, or lack of kitchen access. Okano’s Gift helps fill that gap by providing ready‑to‑heat, chef‑prepared meals that offer nourishment, ease, and dignity right when it’s needed most.
